Michelle Howe was born on August 27, 1988 in Kirkland, Washington. The native of Arlington, Washington has a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Western Washington University and a master's degree in sport physiology from East Tennessee State University. She was a sprinter and a hurdler at her high school and collegiately at Western Oregon University. She was first introduced to the sport of bobsled while working on her PhD at East Tennessee State University. She found out about bobsled from her dissertation chair, Brad Deweese, (the former strength and conditioning coach in Lake Placid.)
