John Macchione III was born on Monday, January 7, 1991 in New Brunswick, N.J. The native of Tewksbury, N.J. grew up playing soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming and lacrosse. In 2008-09 he was ranked #1 in the world for Goalie Wars, which is a 1v1 goalkeeper vs. goalkeeper sport that took place on a 20-yard field. In 2005, he placed second in New Jersey fencing for freshmen after tearing his meniscus in the round of 32. In 2009, he qualified and competed at fencing nationals. Macchione won the New Jersey U-23 State Time Trial Championships in cycling in 2011 and 2012.

He was a two-sport NCAA Division I athlete. After a torn quad injury one month before his freshman year started, he walked on to the rowing team. The following year he walked onto the soccer team. Ultimately, he left soccer to continue his cycling career. He completed one sprint triathlon by himself and he also placed fourth at the 2012 Rev3 Half-full (Olympic distance) Relay. In 2013, he won the Monticelloman Relay (Half-Iron), where he won the bike leg by 30 minutes.

He was first introduced to bobsled and skeleton while he was watching the 2002 Olympic Games. He desperately wanted to try skeleton. Then, while he was attending George Washington University, he kept hearing about Elana Meyers Taylor, who had graduated from GW a few years before him. He messaged her on Facebook one day and she told her to attend a combine.

He followed her advice and went to Lake Placid the following summer to try out for skeleton. Once he arrived, Don Hass told him he was way too big for skeleton. The following December, he flew out to Park City, Utah where he met Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming. At the end of the driving school, he talked with the coaches and decided to make the move to Utah to dedicate his life to bobsled. After just about one month, he competed in his first North American Cup Races.

Macchione has a Bachelor's of Business Administration, with a concentration in marketing from GW.
