Brian Shimer Bobsled Head Coach

Brian Shimer has been with USA Bobsled & Skeleton for 29 years as an athlete and as a coach. In his current role of bobsled head coach, Shimer helps to develop the USABS high performance plan. He is responsible for the oversight and direction of the bobsled program, including the selection and coaching of the bobsled national team athletes, as well as implementing the evaluation process for athletes and coaches and the recruitment of potential bobsled athletes. Furthermore, Shimer is responsible for selecting the best and fastest team combinations and arranging staff and equipment needed to conduct the race following FIBT rules. He creates and implements an annual bobsled budget and provides leadership to USABS athletes and staff, requiring them to adhere and enforce USABS policies and procedures.

Shimer also assists in several activities, including:

Coordination of the shipping schedule for sleds and creation of carnets
Organization and execution of the push camps and push championships
Development and adherence of selection criteria
Improvement of runner/ sled technology and testing
Creation of schedule for training runs, as well as races

Shimer is a graduate of Morehead State University in Kentucky, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in industrial technology. He is a five-time Olympic bobsledder for Team USA and was awarded the bronze medal as pilot in the four-man event at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, alongside Mike Kohn, Doug Sharp and Dan Steele. Shimer was awarded the 2010 United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year award.
